On June 7-9, 2019, Family Weekend Retreat (FWR) brought 55 families and 59 Staff/volunteers to the campus of Texas School for the Deaf where we showed them that “Families Matter.”

Children ages 6 months – 18 years old enjoyed activities, learning and meeting new friends while their adult family members were doing the same on the campus of St. Edwards University.

Saturday morning began with TSD Superintendent Claire Bugen welcoming and encouraging families, followed by Dr. Chris Moreland, a Deaf doctor from San Antonio, Texas, and his wife, Dr. Dawn Mudie, who inspired families through their presentation “Broad Horizons for Deaf Children: The Power of Family and Caregivers.” After this motivational start, families were able to attend multiple training sessions throughout the rest of the day. The evening was capped off with fun water events for the whole family, including a giant water slide!

FWR had a great ending on Sunday, with Roger and Sherry Williams providing practical guidance through the journey of raising deaf children. Then, Bill and Sarah Wainscott helped us all to focus on planning our family’s real-life adventures.

Families find that Family Weekend Retreat helps them to connect and develop relationships with other families in similar situations as well as being informative and motivating. As one participant said, “There is so much offered. It was an extraordinary experience for me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart”

We’re looking forward to next year, June 5-7, 2020, for our 32nd annual Family Weekend Retreat.

A special thanks to Texas Hands & Voices/Guide By Your Side, Texas School for the Blind & Visually Impaired (TSBVI), and Region 13 Education Service Center for their support in helping to provide a rich learning and growing experience for families from across Texas.
