• Mental Health Interpreter Training 2021 Summer Series

    Back again for 2021 is the Mental Health Interpreter Training series. This summer, five sessions are available for professionals who want to learn about or acquire new skills relating to interpreting in the mental health field. Sessions are live via Zoom and CEUs are provided. Read the course descriptions to make the perfect pick.

    CEUs Available: RID, CPE, BEI, LMSW, LPC. You will be able to choose more than one.



    Course Descriptions:

    Level I (Introductory)
    Interpreting in the Mental Health setting is arguably the most challenging setting for sign language interpreters. This workshop will provide the beginning interpreter with techniques specific to the mental health setting as it intersects with the educational setting. These will include interpreting disordered form, applying the RID Code of Professional Conduct, and coping with transference and countertransference issues. Attention will also be given to the emotional issues, both intra- and inter-psychic, which the mental health setting can bring to the fore.

    July 26 - 27, 2021 from 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM
    This session is conducted in ASL only. Participants should have, at a minimum, beginner ASL proficiency.

    July 28 - 29, 2021 from 8;30 AM to 12:30 PM
    This session is conducted in spoken English only. Participants who do not know ASL would benefit from this session.

    Level II (Advanced)
    This advanced training will delve into the intersection of Mental Health and other interpreting settings. Focus will be given to Demand-Control Schema and operating within Role Space, as well as ethical and effective decision making. Participants will explore how language disorder can be compounded by medication, etiology of deafness, language deprivation, and Fund of Knowledge. Attention will be given to communication assessment, trauma-informed care, and legal considerations for Mental Health work. The session is conducted in ASL only. Participants should have, at a minimum, intermediate ASL proficiency

    July 30 - 31, 2021 from 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM

    July 27, 2021 from 1;30 PM to 5:30 PM
    This workshop will introduce participants to ideas about how and when to appropriately share information about interpreting work in the context of specialty settings.  Participants will explore ethical considerations and employ the Demand-Control Schema when discussing decision making. The group will learn steps and norms for presenting and discussing cases followed by hands-on application by engaging in supervised consultation groups.

    DI / HI Teams in Mental Health Interpreting

    July 29, 2021 from 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM
    This workshop will look at techniques used by deaf/hearing interpreter teams working in mental health settings including: how and why we advocate for CDI/CHI teams, ethical framework for pre/during/post conferencing, suggestions for effective teaming strategies with the core principles of respect, relationship, trust, and communication. The workshop format will be both lecture and interactive, giving everyone the opportunity to practice the techniques.
