About SKI-HI Deaf Mentor training

The training prepares adults who are deaf or hard of hearing to become a SKI-HI Deaf Mentor. Participants will learn how to communicate easily with families who are learning ASL, work with young children, and provide families with necessary resources and information. The training will also cover the SKI-HI Deaf Mentor curriculum that is used in Deaf Mentor sessions.

About Statewide Outreach Center's Deaf Mentor program
Deaf Mentor services are offered free to families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing, ages birth to 5. Mentors provide families lessons in Early Visual Communication and American Sign Language. The program is beneficial to families as they navigate the concept of setting up a bilingual-bicultural environment in their homes. The Mentors will work with the families to create a home environment that is free of any communication barriers and will be conducive to the child's language acquisition. Mentors meet with each family regularly, either in the family’s home or remotely, to provide a positive and hopeful perspective from their day-to-day, real-life experiences as a person with a hearing difference living in a hearing world. Deaf Mentors in this program are required to commit for a year.
