Now Dr. Jekyll no longer has to seclude himself. He has been out interacting, socializing with friends, and has been doing so for the last few months. And then one day he secludes himself again. This goes on for several days. Now Mr. Utterson was wondering what was going on, and he decides to see his friend Dr. Lanyon. Now Dr. Lanyon's health had deteriorated significantly, and Mr. Utterson wonders about the relationship between Dr. Jekyll and his deteriorated health. And when asked about it, Dr. Lanyon angrily says, I do not want to talk about it. So Mr. Utterson decides to go home. And he writes a letter to Dr. Jekyll asking him why he's in seclusion. Why is he cut off from his friends. Dr. Jekyll responds with I must isolate myself because of these dangerous goings on. And then a couple of weeks later, Dr. Lanyon dies. Now Mr. Utterson gets a letter from Dr. Lanyon with instructions not to open the letter until either Dr. Jekyll dies or disappears. Mr. Utterson really wanted to read that letter, but he agreed to follow the instructions and file it away.
