Texas Transition and Employment Guide in PDF

Transitions are critical periods of time in a student’s journey through the educational system into either postsecondary education, the working world, or independent living. In the educational field, a transition is commonly known as the period between high school and college or careers. However, a transition occurs when students move from one educational program to another, such as from middle school to high school.

Students need to successfully move from one educational program to another with the right tools and skills. When students are equipped, they are prepared to complete their education, career, or life goals as independently as possible.

A truly successful transition process is the result of comprehensive team planning that is driven by the dreams, desires, and abilities of youth. A transition plan provides the basic structure for preparing an individual to live, work and play in the community, as fully and independently as possible.”

Services and resources are designed to support students and families for a successful entry into the workforce. Transition services include, but are not limited to:

    • Transition considerations in a student’s IEP
    • Skill assessment and development
    • Dual credit courses
    • Post-secondary or career planning
    • Independent Living
    • Career Exploration opportunities
    • Employment experience or training
    • Summer and year-round activities, such as camps, workshops, or seminars
    • Vocational rehabilitation counseling
    • Pre-employment transition services (Pre-ETS)

While all periods of transition are important, this resource focuses on students ages 14 to 22 who are currently in an educational program. In addition to web resources, the Statewide Outreach Center at Texas School for the Deaf (SOC at TSD) offers I Can! programs such as career and college preparation, employment training, and other Pre-ETS topics.
