TEACHER NOTES:

This lesson was developed for teachers to be able to use this book in their classrooms with students who are deaf and hard of hearing. The lesson was designed with videos created in American Sign Language as well as worksheets and activities for teachers, students and parents to access and support the text from the book. This lesson also provides activities for a range of grades 3rd-5th. Teachers have the ability to mix and match according to their classroom. For struggling readers these activities can be guided by the teacher. Students can create video responses vs written if needed.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Students will make inferences and predictions based on information in the text.
  • Students will able to identify, define, and discuss loyalty, sacrifice, courage, and hope as they apply to the story. The student will become aware of sacrifices they can make to help others.
  • Students will make connections to personal experiences, ideas in other texts, and society.
  • Students will write a response to a literary or informational text that demonstrates an understanding of the text.
